British supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive has signed a conditional 20-year lease on a new 75,000 sqft bespoke unit at the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP).

The new purpose built unit is being designed and built by Harworth and will act as McLaren’s new Composite Technology Centre that develops and builds carbon-fibre tubs around which its vehicles are built.

The unit construction is due to commence on site in August 2017, with McLaren expected to take occupation in summer 2018, following practical completion.

The move to the AMP follows McLaren’s announcement in February of this year to create 200 jobs at the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District as part of its research partnership with the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre which is already based at the AMP.

Harworth Group chief Owen Michaelson says: “We are delighted to welcome McLaren to the AMP and to be able to support them in their ongoing growth.”

The McLaren Group employs 3400 people located largely at its iconic McLaren Technology Centre headquarters in Woking, UK, and in 2016 had a combined turnover of £898 million. The firm also celebrated the production of its 10,000th car in December 2016.

In a separate transaction, Harworth has also signed a 15-year lease with an unnamed advanced manufacturer for a new 11,044 sqft unit at the AMP.
