The first Trumpf TruPrint 1000 metal additive manufacturing (AM) machine to be installed in the UK will be used by AM metal powder specialist LPW Technology.

To be installed at LPW Technology’s Daresbury Laboratories in Cheshire, it will enhance the firm’s AM R&D.

Says the company's applications manager, Ian Brooks: “LPW is expanding its PowderLife products and solutions throughout the industrial AM process and this new machine enables us to accelerate not only novel alloy development, but also applications testing, process optimisation, powder degradation studies and R&D projects.

“The future lies in understanding data throughout the AM process, from beginning to end, linking together all the processes and data that affect the powder and ultimately, reproducible build quality. Our PowderSolve software package, as part of PowderLife, adds insight into this process. In conjunction with Trumpf, we are looking to enhance our knowledge and specification of AM process parameters.”

Using a 200 W laser to melt metal powder, the TruPrint 1000 has a build area of 100 mm diameter by 100 mm high and creates parts in 20 micron layers (adjustable). The compact machine takes a floor area of 1,445 by 730 mm, is a plug-and-play unit that only requires mains electricity, and boasts a complementary MobileControl App for remote operation and monitoring.
