CADCAM specialist Open Mind Technologies has signed a deal to deliver 20 seats of its hyperMill CADCAM package to a world renowned Formula 1 racing team.

The unnamed F1 team spent two days benchmarking all of the UK’s leading CAM systems providers. From this, two systems justified a one-month trial to identify the most suitable package with hyperMill from Open Mind the final winner. The feasibility study measured the CAM packages on 10 critical criteria. In the areas of computation times, ease of use, intuitive, support, large model capability, model conversation and verification and simulation, Open Mind was a clear leader. The packages were also measured on prismatic, surface and 5-axis machining functionality and this is where the capabilities of hyperMill excelled. The F1 team marked the numerous systems on a score sheet based on the 10 criteria. Out of a maximum of 40 points, hyperMill scored 34 – a long way ahead of its closest competitors with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Previously operating three different CAM systems, the F1 team wanted to standardise its procedures and operate one system that supported its 2-axis, 2½ -axis/prismatic, 3-axis, 4-axis, 5-axis and mill-turn needs. hyperMill was the only system that could offer best-in-class in all these areas. “Working with this world renowned racing team is justification that hyperMill is an industry leading CAM solution for 2, 3, 4 and 5-axis cycles," said Richard Nolan, sales & marketing director at Open Mind Technologies UK. "hyperMill’s advanced collision avoidance technology gives customers a new level of confidence not just in 5-axis, but also 2, 3 and 4-axis.” hyperMill will be used for all parts of the F1 engines, including CAM shafts, pistons, and ports.
