Budget priced solution for machine tool fire risks

1 min read

Kraft & Bauer whose fire extinguishers are fitted as standard by many of Europe's leading machine tool companies has just launched a new budget-priced, manual fire system.

EU law requires machines that run unmanned for long periods of time to have fully automatic fire prevention systems. However where there is some operator presence in the local vicinity the new manual system does away with the more costly remote sensing equipment that operates via either IR (Infra Red) or UV (Ultra Violet) light. The system removes any reliance upon external hand-held fire extinguishers, that do not conform to current health and safety regulations which clearly state that the machinery itself must be equipped with inbuilt fire extinguishers. In case of a fire incident an operator may manually activate the fire suppressant system by using an emergency button and the system will automatically stop the machine and put out the fire, using either CO2 or, in case of machining titanium or magnesium, Argon gas. This system can save about 50 per cent on the cost when compared with fully automatic systems. Kraft & Bauer fire extinguishers have become the preferred choice of grinding machine manufacturers such as Haas, Walter, Schneeberger, Vollmer and Rollomatic and are also fitted to Anca and Reinecker tool grinding machines. There are now well over 400 systems in place throughout the UK, fitted to all types of machine tools including grinding, turning, milling, EDM and superfinishing machines.
