Ajax Machine Tools International has appointed Cranbrook, Kent-based Simmonds Machinery as its agent for the South East, which includes London and the home counties.

Simmonds Machinery will, in particular, represent Ajax's CNC range of machining centres, lathes and turning centres, plus the wide portfolio of manual machines targeted at workshops, education and training establishments. William Savin, managing director of Ajax, said: "Simmonds Machinery is a key appointment in our market building strategy for the UK, as we expand the range of machine tools and equipment and, in particular, the in-house machine build capability at Lymington." Managing Director Richard Simmonds has built up a considerable knowledge over some 30 years in machine tool sales, representing some of the UK's leading names and products. He set up his own operation during 2000 in Cranbrook from where both new and pre-owned lathes, machining centres, grinding, sawing, EDM and fabricating equipment has been sold. Of the Heidenhain-controlled, Ajax AJV700 vertical machining centre that is being built at the Lymington facility of Ajax, Mr Simmonds says: "This machine is creating a lot of interest, particularly due to its 'ready-to-run' price tag starting at under £50,000 for a Heidenhain TNC-controlled 700 mm by 400 mm by 550 mm (650 mm Z-axis option) capacity machine. The AJV-700 has a highly productive specification with the flexibility for tooling and fixturing. The machine has 48 m/min rapids, a 17 kW 10,000 or 12,000 revs/min spindle and the ability to be easily configured for 4- or 5-axis cycles."
