Low-cost shrink-fit tool holder system from LMT

LMT has developed a £2.850 ready to run, shrink-fit assembly machine package for semi-permanent, shank-style cutter to toolholder assembly, ideally suited to low usage environments.

Available from LMT UK of Meriden, the portable ISG 1000 bench top unit is very compact at 390 mm by 310 mm by 640 mm, is powered from a 3-phase plug-in source and will accommodate straight shank tool sizes of 3 mm to 16 mm in diameter, and up to 290 mm in length. Suitable for the tool spindles of machining centres and driven tool units on turn-mill centres, shrink-fit technology advantages include: a higher rigidity set up between the machine spindle bearings and the tip of the cutting tool, a more effective rate of feed per tooth due to more even loading and longer cutting life. In addition, shrink-fit tool assemblies are better able to cope with acceleration of modern spindles and influence of centrifugal force, that can allow a normal toolholding arrangement to suffer from slippage in the collet and even tool drop out. The ISG 1000 unit takes less than 20 seconds to heat the nose area of the toolholder with its 6.5 kW induction heating coil. To speed the cooling process, included in the ISG 1000 package is a cooling adaptor that enables the heat generated to rapidly dissipate via a series of strategically positioned heat sink fins. Also included in the LMT UK package are an interchangeable disc, clamping ring and protective gloves.
