Kennametal’s KBDM face-mills suit automotive aluminium

Designed specifically for abrasive automotive aluminium such as grades 319 and 390 is Kennametal’s KBDM face-milling system.

It employs a fine-pitch aluminium body with wedge-style clamps and adjustable pockets. A variety of PCD inserts is available, from mini-tips for light finishing cuts to full-face wipers, standard cartridge inserts and 12.7 mm axial cutters for heavy roughing and shoulder cutting.

Developed for high volume machining, the KBDM is stocked in standard sizes of 63-200 mm, although bespoke cutters up to 550 mm in diameter can also be ordered. In addition, there are options for integral shank bodies, HSK mounting and left-hand cutter rotation, as well as special edge preparations and nose radii.

Kennametal recommends an initial cutting speed of 1,000 m/min and feed rates of 0.01 mm per tooth, although substantially higher values are said to be possible.
