Italy's recent Lamiera trade show highlighted the state of the market for the metal forming machine tool sector that, in Italy, covers about 50 per cent of the value generated by the machine tool industry.

The data on the financial balance for 2009 reflect the effects of the serious economic crisis seen all over the world; Italian production of metal forming machine tools fell by 31.6 per cent to €1,830 million euro. Despite this, Italy took third place in the international producer rankings, behind China and Germany but ahead of Japan, Korea and the USA. Italian exports, while dropping by 31.2 per cent compared to 2008, came to 57.1 per cent of total production in the sector. The most exported machines were bending machines, followed by presses, accounting for 43.5 per cent of total exports (machine tools and production systems). The main outlet market was Germany, although sales fell back by 9.6 per cent to €128.1 million. Exports were up 37.7 per cent, at €88.5 million, to China, the second largest international user country of Italian metal forming machines. Sales were down to €69.5 million for the USA (-36.4 per cent), €65.7 million for France (-18.3 per cent), €51.1 million for Brazil (-23.6 per cent), €48.8 million for Russia (-49.6 per cent) and €36.2 million for Spain (-56.8 per cent).
