The automotive division of German photonics equipment manufacturer Jenoptik has received a Society of Plastics Engineers Automotive Innovation Award in Livonia, Michigan, in November, together with US automotive supplier Magna Exterior and carmaker GM.

The award was given in the process, assembly and enabling technologies category during an official ceremony. It honours Jenoptik’s process for robotic laser cutting and welding of class A exterior fascia, which came out top against five other nominated innovations.

Specialising in innovative products and processes with the best price-performance ratio, Magna replaced the previous punching and ultrasonic welding technology for producing class A exterior bumpers by high-tech machines from Jenoptik. The modern laser process, which can also be applied to other plastic exterior and interior components, allows for a higher flexibility in production - in contrast to the previous process.

Jenoptik’s machine concept was developed specifically for processing bumpers, and combine one 3D laser cutting and one 3D laser welding unit, offering high flexibility for complex processing a wide range of bumpers and also other complex interior and exterior components.

The company also offers production metrology equipment.
