CoroMill Plura light cutting action 50° helix angle end mills enhance titanium finishing

  • Sandvik Coromant end mills titanium machining
Sandvik Coromant has added a series of specialised end mills for finishing titanium to its CoroMill Plura range. Featuring a light cutting action facilitated by an novel 50° helix angle, the end mills are optimised for titanium alloys used commonly in the aerospace industry, particularly finishing and semi-finishing in deep pockets with thin walls. The design allows cutting at high metal removal rates without inducing vibration, says the company.

The CoroMill Plura standard range has been developed to cover typical lengths and radii for pocketing in 3 and 5-axis milling applications, however, the poor machineability of titanium, compared to general steels, has led Sandvik Coromant to develop a new solid carbide end mill solution that relies on a 50° helix angle to minimise cutting forces and produce the necessary small chips required for successful finishing operations.

Pitched at titanium alloys up to 48 HRc, the 50° helix angle cutters are described as ideal for finishing deep pockets with corner radii. Other technical features include a neck for best reach, extra 5xD length with 6.35 mm radius and variable flute depth depending on the application.

Available in GC1620, a reliable solid carbide grade, these end mills have a multi-layered PVD coating for long tool life at high cutting data on ISO S and ISO M application area materials. For instance, tests demonstrate that when finish machining titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V with the CoroMill Plura 50° helix cutters, a tool life of 94 minutes can be achieved at a cutting depth of 0.5 mm, a cutting speed of 120 m/min and a feedrate of 0.1 mm/rev.

The CoroMill Plura 50° helix cutters are available in diameters from 4 to 20 mm.
