Large capacity Chiron vertical machining centre

  • Large capacity Chiron vertical machining centre
Chiron Werke (Chiron Werke UK) has introduced its BIG MILL series of vertical machining centres.

The new series has X-axis travels from 1,250 up to 6,000 mm, but larger machines can be supplied.

The Y-axis features a stroke of up to 920 mm, and the Z-axis has up to 1,000 mm of travel. Axis acceleration is up to 0.7 G at 60m/min.

The machine can be supplied as a 3-axis or as a 5-axis unit. Five-axis versions take in an NC swivel head type, allowing complex workpieces to be machined from all sides, or in combination with an NC rotary table. Besides this, the traditional 5-axis arrangement with swivel-bridge and integrated face plate is offered.

The direct drive spindle produces up to 51.5 kW, develops torque of 600 Nm, while maximum speed is up to 12,000 rpm. Spindle connection is HSK-A 100 or SK 50, and the chain magazine offers room for 26 (optionally 40) tools, although the number of tool places can be increased to 197 by using a space-saving integrated background magazine.

The BIG MILL requires just 2 secs for tool change; chip-to-chip times are 4.9 seconds.

When machining St 60, BIG MILL can cut up to 1,200 cm³/min; can drill 88 mm diameter holes; and can tap threads up to M 56.

The control panel can be pushed along the X-axis so that setters can always operate the CNC. Siemens or Heidenhain controls are offered
