Kern Pyramid Nano gets hydrostatics package

  • Kern Pyramid Nano gets hydrostatics package
Kern's Pyramid Nano high precision machining centre is now supplied with hydrostatic technology, offering a jig/co-ordinate grinding' package.

This new development makes it possible for end users to conduct high speed milling and jig grinding in one clamping set-up on a single machine.

Mould manufacturers and manufacturers of deep drawing, stamping, embossing and coining tools are all able to benefit from the system. The new package for the Pyramid Nano is also suited for high accuracy machining applications involving hard and brittle materials, such as ceramics, glass, sinter materials, silica and corundum .

Hydrostatic drives and guideways possess no mechanical contact and thus zero mechanical friction, so that unwanted effects such as slip stick or back lash and resultant vibrations are eliminated. Defined movements of 0.1 µm are now repeatedly possible, with surface finishes of less than 0.05 µmRa (i.e. 50 nm) now achievable via milling or grinding.

Contour accuracy is also remarkable. Core hole jig grinding with a repeatable roundness of 1 µm, or seat-grinding with repeatable contour accuracies of 0.5 µm have been demonstrated.

The auxiliary 'co-ordinate/jig grinding' package comprises a dresser spindle, an ultrasonic tool zeroing touch probe, and a special parameter set that allows independent Z-axis movement. A tool changer with a capacity of up to 96 positions plus the versatile internal or external automated pallet changers create a highly productive and flexible machining cell.
