Walter cryogenic system tools take the heat out of machining difficult materials

Walter Cryo.tec milling, drilling and turning tools use a special nitrogen cooling process to enhance cutting speeds and extend tool life – especially when machining difficult-to-cut materials.

Walter and MAG have collaborated on the development of a range of tools for use with the system for machining materials such as titanium, nickel-based alloys and spheroidal cast iron or cast iron containing vermicular graphite. Tests on vermicular graphite workpieces have shown speed increases of 60%, says Walter, as well as reduced costs due to the lower price of liquid nitrogen and eliminating the need to dispose of coolant.

Walter's cryogenic system is based on supplying liquid nitrogen to the centre of the cutting tool via the machine spindle, dissipating cutting temperatures and, therefore, minimising tool friction and swarf adhesion. Depending on the application, the nitrogen can be combined with minimal lubrication.
