CML Alloys installs WARDJet waterjet cutting table for titanium cutting

  • Water jet profiling of titanium CML Alloys
CML Alloys has taken delivery of a turnkey waterjet cutting system from Wightman Stewart, allowing it to cut nickel alloys and titanium with a high degree of accuracy and with minimal waste of material.

The supplied system includes an AccuStream AS Series intensifier, Dialine diamond cutting heads and a WARDJet waterjet cutting table having a twin screen CNC controller.

CML Alloys is cutting titanium sheet to finished tolerances of +0.0/0.2 mm, with the WARDJet machine laser-mapped and ball barred to comfortably achieve this. The two independent Z axes incorporate height sensors, which are very important when cutting expensive materials, giving CML Alloys full confidence in the cutting process.

In addition to the stated benefits, the investment has allowed CML to reduce lead times and extended its range of services to provide fully machined parts to exacting customer specifications.

The WARDJet ZX-2543 has been custom designed with a large 2.5 by 4.3 m cutting table to accommodate large sheets of titanium. While most of the titanium cutting involves straight-line work, the 2.5 m deep table gives CML Alloys the facility to cut components that include large dished heads. The AccuStream Dialine cutting heads offer a high quality and repeatable cut, with the diamonds increasing machine uptime, offering an estimated life cycle of 1,000 hours.

"One of the key reasons for investing in waterjet through Wightman Stewart was the fact that they listened carefully to our requirements and came up with the solution that suited us - the customer - rather than them - the supplier," said Peter Moriarty, general manager of CML Alloys.
