South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) is to set up a wind turbine manufacturing plant in Scotland.

Announced at the Scottish Offshore Wind and Supply Chain Conference in Aberdeen (31 Jan- 1 Feb), the company is to spend £100 million setting up a wind turbine manufacturing facility at the Energy Park at Methil, near Fife. This is SHI's first European factory.

The company will develop its new 7 MW offshore wind turbine there, while it has also signed a multi-million pound deal with David Brown Gear Systems (David Brown) to supply gearbox systems for SHI's next generation offshore wind turbine.

SHI has stated that it "has set the mid-term target of achieving the world's seventh largest market share of 10% by 2015".
