Rolls-Royce approves Fuchs metalworking coolant

Fuchs Lubricants has gained approval for its Ecocool S761B metalworking coolant to be used by any Rolls-Royce facility or subcontractor as a heavy duty coolant and as a creep feed grinding fluid, under CSS 129 and CSS 131 specifications.

Rolls-Royce's fluid management committee, in conjunction with Nottingham University, tested Ecocool S761B to extreme performance parameters. Richard Rogers, Fuchs European sector coordinator for aerospace, commented: "The rigorous testing conducted by Rolls-Royce proves our fluid is capable of working in even the most demanding of conditions, it affirms that all the intensive research and hard work which has gone into developing this fluid has reached fruition".

Fuchs Lubricants, an AS9100 approved company, has been working, alongside its global counterparts, to develop and produce a coolant for the next generation of aircraft which is able to significantly extend tool life while providing excellent surface finish. Its global research team developed Ecocool S761B, a high performance soluble oil coolant for use in both ferrous and non-ferrous metalworking applications, primarily designed for machining hard metals such as titanium (including Ti 6-4 and Ti-5553).

An independent study, carried out at Warwick University, found Ecocool S761B to be the best performing product in terms of tool wear, offering 100% better performance than Fuchs' closest competitor's product. "We are very pleased with the results of this study", says Jill Cowell, Fuchs' UK Aerospace industry specialist, "it confirms our own findings that Ecocool S761B is a real breakthrough for titanium machinists and can offer significant cost saving benefits".

Fuchs' Ecocool S761B has already achieved Boeing BAC 5008 and Pratt & Whitney PMC 9346-1 approvals.
