RK International Machine Tools founder Ray Schwarz death announced

  • RK International Machine Tools founder Ray Schwarz death announced
Ray Schwarz, founder of RK International Machine Tools, passed away on 3 January, 2012. He was aged 89.

A former RAF Spitfire pilot, Ray Schwarz, along with his mother, Kath, set-up RK Supply (Croydon) in 1951 - the RK name was created from a combination of their Christian name initials.

The company, initially based in Croydon but now headquartered in Erith, Kent, began by supplying small tools to industry, but after constant requests for quality used machines, Ray led RK into the machine tool market.

The 1960s saw RK secure agencies for leading global manufacturers, many of which RK still offers today. At that time, the company was one of over 30 distributors for the range of Colchester and Harrison Lathes and the company retains that link today, being the sole remaining UK distributor.

Under Ray's leadership, the company also produced its own range of surface and belt grinding machines. The 'Arkardia' range bears the RK Supply logo which, although evolved over the years, still resembles the current RK insignia.

Ray retired to Spain in 1972 and his son Mike Schwarz took over as managing director. In 1999, John Schwarz became the third generation of the family to manage the firm, steering the company into the new millennium.

A family funeral will be held near Ray's south of France home on Tuesday, 10 January.
