DMG Mori Co, the Japan-listed part of Japanese-German machine tool expert DMG Mori, has signed a memorandum of understanding with camera and measurement expert Nikon Corporation that will see the two collaborate on ways to apply Nikon's technologies in DMG Mori machine tools.

The release adds that Nikon will, moreover, accelerate the launch of its material processing business through the collaboration; for example, Nikon will utilise DMG Mori’s global sales network to sell its unique optical processing machines that performs various metal processing with high precision using laser.

It goes on to say that “Nikon’s outstanding and wide-ranging competences based on optoelectronics and precision technologies and DMG Mori’s unique resources will together generate synergy effects through the business collaboration”.

The announcement further says that machine tool users have been increasing investment in high accuracy machines, digitalisation and automation to realise high-mix/low-volume production, with this trend accompanied by a growing demand for non-contact measurement technology, due to advancement in the integration of mechanical machining and measurement.

Together with Nikon, DMG Mori will focus even more on development of products that facilitate high-accuracy and digitalisation. Nikon will, on the other hand, expand sales of its optical processing machines and accelerate the launch of a material processing business, which is one of the core focus areas of its medium-term management plan from FY 2019 to 2021.
