MTD's Modulam system's accuracy helps secure contracts

  • MTD's Modulam system's accuracy helps secure contracts
Tipton-based Midland Tool and Design (MTD) is collaborating with a Californian company to provide stampings for use in power regeneration, via a large flywheel, by converting and reusing the energy generated during braking by trains on the US subway network.

Key to securing the contract had been the accuracy of MTD's innovative Modulam system (detailed in the products section here) and the company's established experience.

"We've been producing laminations and related tooling for 40 years now and that appealed to the client," said managing director Darren Booton. "The customer wanted to deal with a company with that expertise because the accuracy of the laminations is crucial to the success of the project."

"By using the Modulam system we can also ensure stampings meet their exact requirements immediately, meaning the project could begin without any delay in manufacturing an accurate prototype."

Despite only being launched in January, the has already helped MTD bring in major contracts in the aerospace, medical components and motorsports sectors.

Since the turn of the year, the firm has embarked on projects with several aerospace companies, supplying laminated core packs, which enabled the client to bring its product to market with dramatically reduced lead times.

Midland Tool and Design employs 28 people at its 20,000 ft² site in Tipton and is currently working towards gaining AS9100 aerospace standard.
