Latest Guhring drills at MACH 2020

At MACH 2020 (Birmingham NEC, 20-24 April) in Hall 17 on Stand 400, Guhring will be introducing its latest RT100XF carbide drill, alongside a host of additional hole-making innovations that will include the HT800 indexable-head drills, the EB80 gun drills and the HR500 reaming lines.

The RT100XF has been created to reduce cycle times for difficult-to-machine materials and special applications in series production; the extremely hard drilling line is said to be extremely resilient to potential breakages. This bold claim is based upon the newly developed carbide grade that performs a balancing act between hardness and toughness. The special structure of this grade has a re-sharpening effect, so breakages that normally accelerate tool wear, no longer occur. This grade is supplemented by the existing nanoFire coating system that has been subjected to a specially designed pre- and post-treatment which makes it significantly more robust.

In terms of geometry, an early double-margin support optimises coaxiality to deliver the required bore size and roundness. Furthermore, polished flutes reduce heat transfer to the component, which also supports the fast evacuation of chips, while thermal changes such as hardening are avoided. The through-coolant drills are suitable for the drilling of structural and case-hardened steels, free-cutting and heat-treated steels, Nimonics, titanium, Inconel and Hastelloy. Available in 5xD and 7xD, the drills can be purchased in diameters from 3 to 20 mm diameter, in 0.1 mm increments.

Alongside the latest RT100XF at MACH will be the HT800 WP indexable-insert drilling system. Developed for extreme process reliability, the HT800 WP range is available in diameters from 11 to 40 mm, with drilling depths of 1.5xD, 3xD, 5xD, 7xD and 10xD. Offering interchangeable inserts for steel, stainless, cast iron and aluminium alloys, the HT800 WP comes in an array of insert geometries, grades, drill body diameters and lengths.

For longer, deeper and more challenging hole-making requirements, Guhring will be introducing its single-fluted EB80 XXL gun-drilling series at the show. These especially long, single-fluted gun drills with brazed carbide heads are now available in eight different lengths from 600 to 2,000 mm.

The EB80 XXL enables much faster processing times compared with conventional spiral deep-hole drills, says Guhring, which is credit to the polished flute that guarantees chip control and protection against wear when drilling steel and non-ferrous metals. Notably, the TiN coating further extends service life and makes the EB80 XXL optimally suited for deep-hole drilling machines and use in mould and die applications.

Complementing the drilling lines at MACH will be the extended HR500 solid-carbide universal reaming line. These reamers are suitable for finishing holes on an array of materials that include steels, aluminium alloys, cast materials, plastics, magnesium alloys, copper, brass and much more.
