Honda to assemble diesel engines in UK

Honda Motor Co plans to produce diesel engines in Britain, according to a mid-April Reuters report.

The item says the move is in response to strong demand in Europe for fuel-efficient vehicles. At the moment Honda, which is Japan’s third-biggest carmaker, exports its 2.2 i-CTDi diesel engines (pictured) to its Swindon factory from Japan. According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei), said Reuters, Honda plans to transfer part of the engine production Swindon. Swindon will first assemble diesel engines from components sent from Japan, but will later increase its output capacity to 20,000 to 30,000 units a year by producing engine parts in the UK. Honda currently makes about 70,000 diesel engines a year at two Japanese plants; they are used in four models sold in Europe. Honda aims to boost its combined annual production capacity for diesel engines in the two countries by 40 per cent to 100,000 units in the current fiscal year. As of last year, Honda’s UK engine plant has already delivered 2 million units and 1.5 million cars.
