Group shows that it does ‘what it says on the label’

  • Group shows that it does ‘what it says on the label’
The Engineering Technology Group’s November open house (15-17 November) demonstrated that the company is practicing what it preaches – the delivery of high-productivity, one-hit engineered machining solutions.

The Southam, Warks-based Group includes vertical machining centre maker Chiron Werke UK, Turning Technologies (Nakamura-Tome), fixture maker Hyfore, automation specialist Hyformation and, additionally now, washing and degreasing specialist LBW and its ‘Surface Alliance’ partners EMO, Hoesel and MecanoLav.

The one-hit turnkeys on show were based around Chiron and Nakamura-Tome technology. The first based on a M800 high-speed 5-axis Chiron vertical is for Londonderry-based Maydown Precision Engineering for the machining of 30 different parts for the wings of a Bombardier Shorts aircraft. Chiron Werke received the order some three weeks prior to the open house and was proving parts during the event. “Not one has been wrong,” offered Chiron Werke UK managing director Richard Blake.

The project is to be delivered this month, the from-solid-billet process being developed on the Southam showroom machine as the customer’s was being built in Germany. The turnkey package brings together Group companies Chiron Werke UK and Hyfore and external firms Delcam (CADCAM), Hexagon Metrology (CMM) and Iscar (tooling). The Group has subsequently signed an agreement to work with Delcam.

The other turnkey is for Precision Magnetics, Rotherham and is based on a Nakamura-Tome WT300 MMY. The company has no history of in-house manufacturing but is establishing a new factory on the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham to manufacture its own design of electric actuators for aircraft. This machine is the first of a number.
