Fives Giddings & Lewis on the hunt for a bit of history; offers 8000 system CNC upgrade

1 min read

The hunt is on for the oldest Giddings & Lewis machine tool as the brand celebrates its 160th anniversary this month.

Now part of French engineering giant Fives and called Five Giddings & Lewis, the company wants to locate the oldest Giddings & Lewis machine still in production, as well as the machine that is the furthest away from our Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA location.

To submit a machine for consideration, or for more information on the contest, customers are asked to contact their regional sales manager or Kimberly Prophett (Kimberly.prophett@fivesgroup.com).

Today, Fives Giddings & Lewis produces horizontal machining centres, horizontal, borers and vertical turning lathes.

Most recently the company announced a retrofit option for its G&L 8000 control, as the Giddings & Lewis 8000 control has reached the end of its life, with Fives no longer offering any updates or enhancements for this product. This follows Kollmorgen closing its support efforts for the G & L 8000 control.

As a FANUC authorised integrator, Fives has been able to bring the OEM proprietary features of the Giddings & Lewis 8000 control platform, such as axis tracking, to a FANUC solution. This will offer better performance, increased applications abilities, commercially available components, improved quality, and increased productivity.
