DSG lathe gets life on board US aircraft carrier

  • DSG lathe gets life on board US aircraft carrier
The newly rejuvenated Dean, Smith & Grace has received an order for a new manual machine destined for the machine shop of the US Navy’s Nimitz Class aircraft carrier, the George H W Bush (41st president of the USA).

The order, valued at £??,000 came via Monarch Lathes LP, Sidney, Ohio and is for a 2415P manual lathe equipped with 125 mm diameter hollow spindle bore. The machine has a 24 inch swing over the bed and 15 over the cross-slide (hence 2415). Monarch was once the owner of Dean, Smith & Grace.

“The order reflects the esteem in which our lathes are held,” said Dean, Smith & Grace managing director Nigel Grainger. “It will be expected to perform a wide variety of essential engineering work for the total life of the ship.”

Nimitz Class carriers have a deck area of 4.5 acres and they are as long as the Empire State building is high. Delivery of the George H W Bush is scheduled for 2008 with ‘christening’ scheduled for next year.
