Craftsman Tools' order book for expanding mandrels has been boosted by 30 per cent over the past year.

An order from existing cliient electric motor manufacturer AO Smith Corporation is the latest to help achieve this feat, following its relocation from Ireland to Shanghai. Craftsman Tools managing director Robert Johnson, said: “The AO Smith order saw our designers taking account of very specific requirements that included the machine mountings, how the operations were going be performed, loading and unloading arrangements, work stops and orientation. “The solution that the design team came up with provided features to take into account single tapers to provide support for the sleeve over its entire working length; positive release to eliminate problems associated with self release tapers, and bonded slots to reduce ingress of debris.” Exports now account for just around 46 per cent of Craftsman’s work, and last year, for the first time, sales from the company’s satellite office in Chicago, which trades at Chevin Tools, topped $1 million.
