What do you call a turning machine that mills? A mill-turn lathe. But what about a machining centre that turns? The fact that there is no universally recognisable term for such a machine and that people automatically think of a lathe when ‘mill-turn’ is mentioned is an indication of how rare is such an animal. In true vacuum cleaner (Hoover) tradition, though, they might credibly be called a ‘Stama’, for it is German vertical machining centre maker Stama, located close to Stuttgart, that has put the technology on the map, and which is comprehensively making this technology its own.
