XYZ Machine Tools SMX 2500 CNC/manual bed mill joins three larger models in the SMX bed mill range, with all four models equipped with the latest generation ProtoTRAK SMX 3 3-axis control.

Bed mill is smaller brotherThe SMX 2500 is a 3 hp/2.25 kW variable spindle speed head machine – 70 to 4200 rpm in two speed ranges – with a 1245 mm by 228 mm table holding components weighing up to 600 kg. X, Y and Z-axis travels are 812 mm, 406 mm and 685 mm, respectively, with 3.8 m/min rapid traverse in all three axes.

Weighing 1900 kg, the SMX 2500 has a Meehanite cast iron base to provide maximum stability and vibration damping. Induction hardened dovetail ways with Turcite-coated slide ways prevent ‘slipstick’, while precision ground ballscrews powered by high-performance servo motors contribute to a perfect milled finish.

Smooth and accurate cutting performance is guaranteed by the lifetime lubricated and dynamically balanced spindle cartridge, with the 127 mm travel chrome hardened and ground quill featuring an R8 spindle taper and an air powered draw bar for quick and easy tool changes.

ProtoTRAK’s use of ‘plain English’ prompts’ when programming is the key to its continuing appeal, particularly when machining small batches or one-off components.

Handwheels allow the machinist to ‘feel’ the cutting process when manual machining is the preferred option but are disengaged automatically when the machine is running under CNC control.
