Compact footprint turning centre combines power and mechanical rigidity for turning tough materials October 2008

Powerful machining capability, high speed performance and accuracy are offered within the compact footprint Goodway GA-2000/300 CNC turning centre. Featuring a 15 kW Fanuc Alpha P22 twin-speed double wound high torque spindle motor the GA-2000/300 has enough power to machine duplex stainless steel, titanium, Inconel and difficult high nickel content alloys. To achieve maximum spindle accuracy and rigidity P4 grade (class 7) spindle bearings from NSK are used.

The flat bed and 30º wedge saddle on the GA-2000/300 provides optimal positioning of the reinforcing ribs, which are cast directly into the one-piece cast iron bed structure, increasing mechanical rigidity by over 40 per cent, says supplier YMT, allowing the compact lathe to perform heavy-duty turning while maintaining positional accuracy.

The hardened and ground box ways are directly formed onto the machine bed during the casting process. These are precision machined to provide the damping and rigidity needed for turning tough materials. This design is inherently rigid which also significantly increases tool life.

The Fanuc spindle motor provides speeds from 48 up to 4,800 rpm and material is held by a 200 mm three-jaw power chuck with a 51 mm diameter bar capacity as standard, although options for 65 and 78 mm bar capacities are available. The GA-2000/300 has a maximum turning diameter of 350 mm and a maximum turning length of 300 mm. The 12-station servo indexing static tooling turret has axis traverse rates of 20 m/min in X and 24 m/min in Z.
