Trumpf moves in on British laser firm 16/09/2008

German machine tool and laser specialist Trumpf has announced its intention to present a takeover proposal to the shareholders of the British laser company SPI Lasers, Southampton.

“Both companies would benefit from a takeover,” said Peter Leibinger, vice chairman of Trumpf and head of the Laser Technology and Electronics Division. “The market for industrial lasers will continue to grow in the future. This is also true for fibre laser applications in the low power range. SPI Lasers is one of the leading manufacturers for fibre lasers. The company has a broad product portfolio and thus complements Trumpf’s product line. The worldwide distribution network, numerous patents as well as technological expertise are also pluses for SPI Lasers.

“The acquisition gives SPI Lasers and Trumpf the opportunity to participate in above-average market growth for fibre lasers in the future,” Mr Leibinger added.

The acquisition would also complement the activities of the joint venture with Jenoptik AG, established in 2007, and which develops optical modules for fibre lasers.

Trumpf will offer £0.4 per share, with the offer amounting to £27.8 million.
