Rego-Fix is expanding its ER and powRgrip range with tapping chucks. The company’s Softsynchro tapping chucks exploit the synchronised control of modern CNC machines, damping axial forces, for example, during high-speed machining which preserves the spindle, and prolongs tools life.
For thread tapping, the European standard EN 22857 outlines the dimensions and tolerances for tapped threads. This permits a maximum tapping tolerance pitch deviation of ±8 micron for a given amount of turns in the thread. For an M10 tap with a 1.5 mm pitch for example, a tolerance of ±8 micron is permitted with a testing length of seven turns. In the worst case, an axial force of up to 1,300 N can result from the tap’s change in length. Synchronisation errors result from the dynamics of the spindle and linear drives. These minimal differences and the tolerances in the tap create warping in the system from the rigid thread tool. This creates abrasion on one side of the flank of the tap which results in material pick-up. It can also lead to unclean thread flanks or to threads that are not true to gauge size.
Matthias Schürch, deputy head of the turning department at Rego-Fix AG,
says: “The better these enormous forces can be dampened and controlled, the greater effect this has on the components of the overall system and the quality of the thread.”
