HPT Wiper coated inserts for turning hard materials June 2008

HPT Wiper coated inserts are ideal for turning annealed, hardened and tempered and stainless steels with a BHN up to 355 HB at speeds up to 480 m/min and grey, nodular graphite and malleable cast irons up to 260 HB at speeds of 500 m/min.

The HPT Wiper insert fits a standard CNMG tool holder giving 0 deg cutting edge and requires a lower cutting force due to the exact alignment of the special combination of radii and straight cutting edge in the direction of feed along the axis of the workpiece.

This also gives improved surface finish when turning very small diameters and the arrangement of the insert geometry also ensures there is no preliminary or post-cutting at the edge of the insert.

LMT’s Drytec (A1203 ceramic-coated) yellow surfaces are applied to the carbide insert, prior to it being finish ground for added precision. This ground area, each side of the insert, ensures excellent heat dissipation especially under dry cutting conditions enabling feedrates to be increased by up to a factor of three against conventional carbide inserts.
