Oil country lathes have 415 mm bore July 2007

Latest additions to the XYZ five-model ‘extra large’ capacity CNC lathe range both feature a 410 mm/16.15 inch spindle bore, making them suited to ‘oil country’ work.

The ‘large bore’ XYZ XL 1200 and smaller, mid-range, ‘large bore’ XYZ XL 1100 are available with a choice of bed length up to 10 metres, enabling the machine configuration to be tailored to a customer’s specific requirements.

All machines in the XL range are equipped as standard with the Siemens 840D conversational ShopTurn control. This control features ‘easy to navigate’ menus and comprehensive Help screens, and can be programmed by operators lacking specific DIN/ISO knowledge. Graphical support and integrated profile calculator make it possible to create any contour quickly and easily, and simulation and many other functions are included to aid rapid programming and program verification.

Weighing in at over 22 tonnes (for a 10 m bed length machine), the ‘large bore’ XYZ XL 1200’s footprint is 13,180 mm (for a 10 m bed length machine) by 2500 mm. The equivalent footprint figures for the smaller, lighter, ‘large bore’ XL 1100 are 12,930 mm by 2300 mm.

The additional weight imparted by the solid ribbed one-piece 692 mm-wide cast iron bed and base casting of the 50 hp/3-250 rpm ‘large bore’ XYZ XL 1200 ensures maximum rigidity during heavy-duty machining, with ‘vee and flat’ bedways on all models providing a large bearing surface that contributes to a high standard of accuracy and surface finish. The headstock is of equally rugged construction, featuring induction hardened and precision ground gears and precision taper roller bearings and support roller bearings that guarantee spindle rigidity and concentricity. Similarly, a substantial tailstock with three clamping points prevents movement when machining components between centres.

Model designations denote the mm swing over bed, with a swing over the cross slide of 950 mm (XL1200)/750 mm (XL 1100). Standard equipment includes a four-jaw independent chuck, four-way toolpost, joystick control for rapid movement, automatic lubrication of all gears and bearings (ensuring thermal stability, quiet running and long life), flood coolant and electro-magnetic spindle brake. Optional equipment includes fixed or travelling steadies, quick change toolpost or electrically-operated or hydraulically-operated turret, and chip conveyor with cart.
