Cleaner cleaning
The arrival of the SED on 31 October signalled a new dawn for manufacturing companies across the UK. The days of open-top solvent degreasing tanks are being confined to the history books, and written documentation detailing the restriction of solvent use in business practice by October 2008 should now be in place. If your company has yet to change to a safer alternative then you will be in breach of the new legislation and could face stiff penalties. |

Exotics machining
Manufacturing components from titanium demands certain specialist know-how, nowhere more than in the selection and application of cutting fluids. As the sole UK agent for Blaser Swisslube AG, the Swiss-based manufacturer of high quality mineral oil and vegetable oil-based water miscible cutting fluids and neat cutting oils, Jemtech (UK), says it is well placed to provide that knowledge. |

Coolants and coolant management
Selecting the right coolant and then maintaining it are key elements in machine shop efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Oel-Held manufactures over 100 cutting oils/coolants, plus tailor-made blends. Correct choice is critical if performance and profit are to be maximised, it says. Arboga-Darenth is a coolant management specialist and says maintaining coolant rather than changing it pays dividends. It is promoting a new system which offers a cost-effective automatic answer. |

Help available for solvent addicts
The Montreal Protocol was negotiated and signed by 24 countries and by the European Economic Community in September 1987. The Protocol called for the parties to phase down the use of CFCs, halons and other man-made Ozone Depleting Chemicals (ODCs). Europe’s Solvent Emissions Directive (SED), introduced in 1999, follows on from that and a final deadline looms for those ‘addicted’ to the use of chlorinated solvents as cleaners on 31 October 2007 |

Keeping it clean
H+S Aviation eliminated the use of trichloroethylene (Trike) in 2004 which in turn reduced the use of solvents by 55 per cent at its workshop facilities in Portsmouth. The benefits have been a reduction in solvents to atmosphere, reduction in hazardous waste disposal, reduction in transportation, the removal of a class 2 carcinogen (which means it may cause cancer), a cleaner working environment and a safer workplace. This has been achieved by installing six aqueous Turbex multi-stage cleaning machines |
